SAMPLE -- No Room
ACT I
The scene opens with the innkeeper dashing about trying to keep everyone served.
Jedediah -- Inn Keeper
Zachariah -- Coming!
Lemuel -- Can we get some service!
Zachariah -- I’ll be right there!
Abigail -- Zachariah!
Zachariah -- Yes, dear?
Jedediah -- Inn Keeper!
Zachariah -- Yes, Sir?
Lemuel -- I’m waiting!
Zachariah -- I’m coming!
Abigail -- Zachariah!
Zachariah -- Yes, dear!
Men -- Inn Keeper!
Zachariah -- Coming!
Abigail -- Zachariah!
Zachariah -- Yes, dear!
Men -- Inn Keeper!
Zachariah -- Help! All day long I feed these faces! Serving them drinks and cleaning their messes! All day long I’m wiping down tables, picking up food scraps, pushing back tables. I work my fingers to the bone, rushing here, rushing there, listening to her nagging tone, it’s not fair, do they care? Why - can’t - they - just - leave - me - alone?
Men -- Inn Keeper!
Zachariah -- There’s no room in the inn!
Abigail -- Zachariah, get in here!
Zachariah -- Troubles loom in the inn!
Men -- Feed us!
Zachariah -- Hold on!
Men -- Serve us!
Zachariah -- I will!
Men -- There’s no food in this inn!
Abigail -- Zachariah!
Men -- You’re so rude in this inn!
Abigail -- Zachariah!
Men -- Let’s go! I’m done! Outta here! Gotta run!
Zachariah -- There’s no room in this inn!
Abigail -- There’s plenty of room now, Zachariah.
Zachariah -- What? Oh! Don’t worry, Abigail, they’ll be back! They already paid for their rooms. Count it a blessing if they don’t return! Then you won’t have to clean up after them.
Abigail -- I’d rather they be spending their money here tonight.
Zachariah -- What money? With Caesar’s call to tax everyone no one is going to spend anything until they know they’ll have something to spend!
Abigail -- Not these fools. They’d rather spend their money now, while they still have it.
Zachariah -- They’ll have to answer to Caesar!
Abigail -- So let them answer! At least they’ll have helped us pay our taxes.
Zachariah -- We’ve got enough money to pay our taxes, don’t worry! It’s getting a dowry for our daughters that frightens me. Three daughters. Thank you Lord, for the blessing!
Abigail -- You’d better thank the Lord, Zachariah. Running this inn takes a lot of cleaning, cooking, ironing, sweeping, and much more! Our three girls do a wonderful job around here.
Zachariah -- I know.
Abigail -- I can’t imagine three boys doing the job.
