ACT I
SCENE I -- At the empty tomb on the first Easter Morning.
Enter John followed by Peter, Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Salome.
John - He's gone, Peter!
Salome - The soldiers; they're gone! They were lying all around.
John - Were they dead?
Salome - I don't know.
John - Mary, you said there was an angel?
Mary - Yes
John - Where was he?
Mary - On the stone.
John - What did he say - exactly?
Salome - ohn, don't pressure her! She's been through a lot.
John - We all have.
Mary - I'm okay. He said to find you and Peter and tell you that Jesus is gone?
John - Gone?
Mary - Not gone, he said that Jesus as...
Peter - (From within the tomb) John! Come here!
Salome - This doesn't make any sense.
Joanna - I don't like this, we shouldn't be here. I'm scared, Salome.
Mary - Where is he? The soldiers couldn't have taken him, could they?
Salome - Not in the condition they were in. Besides, he was already gone.
Peter - (emerging) They have to be his, you can still smell the spices.
John - But why would they leave his burial clothes behind? Grave robbers wouldn't have been this tidy. For that matter they would have taken the clothes with them.
Salome - Unless they wanted to disguise the body.
Peter - As what? If they were seen carrying a body it wouldn't make any difference what he was wearing, they would have been stopped anyway.
Salome - Are you sure they are Jesus' clothes, Peter?
Joanna - They could have been left to confuse us.
John - Why, Joanna?
Joanna - Well ... we are confused, aren't we?
Peter - We won't find out any more here.
Joanna - Let's go, please, before someone else comes and finds us here.
Salome - There's enough trouble without our getting the blame for this, too.
John - Peter, we've got to get the others together and let them know about this. Salome's right, we could be in even more trouble when Pilate finds that his seal has been broken. There's no way Caiaphas is going to miss this opportunity to set Roman dogs on us.
Joanna - I thought they would leave us alone after Jesus was ... taken.
John - Murdered.
Peter - We'll meet in the upper room. Come on.
Salome - What about the clothes?
Mary - I'll keep them. I ... I want to save them.
Peter - All right, Mary.
Salome - Aren't you coming?
Mary - In a minute.
John - We'll find him, Mary, I promise you.
Salome - Don't stay long. The soldiers will be back soon.
All exit except Mary, who begins to weep softly. Two angels appear.
