SAMPLE SCRIPT - I Stand Alone

Prologue – The Cry

We are at the location of stoning of Stephen. Stephen is dead and his father is holding him in his arms down stage right. Saul is up stage left in semi darkness. He is holding the last coat of those who stoned Stephen. Elias’ opening sound is a cry of anguish. Not so much words, but weeping. Think of David as he heard the news of the death of Absalom.
Lights come up after Elias says ‘What have I done” for the first time.

Elias - Aaaaah! (a low groan of anguish increasing in volume and intensity) What have I done? My son. My son. Stephen. My son. What have I done?

Saul - You obeyed the law.

Elias - The law? I do not see the law. Don’t speak to me of the law! This is my son! This is flesh …

Saul - You did what was right.

Elias - … torn …

Saul - Torn because of his heresy.

Elias - … bruised flesh.

Saul - Bruised because of his sin.

Elias - Quiet! … Be silent! Do you think I care now what he did? You have no children, Saul of Tarsus. What would you know of a father’s love? This is my son.

Saul - I do understand, but you must …

Elias - (low and murderous, each word louder) I … said … silence.

Saul steps forward, puts the last cloak on the shoulders of Elias, pats him on the shoulder and exits.

Elias - What would he know of a father’s love? If you were a murderer I could not love you less. If you had stolen all I have I would love you. My love is deeper than your sins, Stephen. Do you understand why I had to do as I did? (cries upwards) God, what have I done? Where have I gone wrong? (to Stephen) Your words haunt me. You asked God to forgive them as they … as they … mutilated your flesh with stones. You forgave me. How can you do that? What thing lies so deep in your soul to allow you to love so freely? (looks upward, searching the past) What changed your life?

Running Time -- 1 hour 50 minutes
I Stand Alone covers moments in the life of Stephen. It begins at his death, but quickly goes back to an earlier time when he first came in contact with ‘those Jesus people’. The play explores his relationship with his brother – Benjamin – and his father – Elias. As time progresses we see Stephen mature into a strong Christian man who eventually is appointed a Deacon of the church, willing to face death for his savior.

The strongest threads are those between Elias and Stephen, then Stephen and Benjamin. Their arguments create the basis for our understanding of the Jewish mind and though vs. budding Christian ideals.

Interwoven through the mix is Benjamin’s duality and the recurring visitor, Saul of Tarsus. In this play Saul is a distant relative of the family. This has no basis in historical fact, but not impossible. Saul provides the extreme views of the Jewish faith and is the tool used by Benjamin to promote his ends.

Benjamin is the protagonist, not the father. He is manipulating behind the scenes for his selfish ends. He shows a different face to each of the other characters. To Elias he is the faithful son. To Stephen he is the protective brother. To Saul he is the spy. He sees himself as the only one worthy of respect. (Shakespearean buffs may see the resemblance to Edmond and Edgar in Richard the III)
