This monologue should last about 3 ½ minutes. A live organist may give good background as well. The actor and musician must work together and practice the ebb and flow of the rhythms and emotions. This script has little dialogue, but is heavy in emotion, thus lengthening the piece. Do not allow the actor to rush through this. We must feel his agony.

The thief is on the cross, tied next to Jesus. He speaks to himself, Jesus and the other thief. He is, of course, in agony, but this is toward the beginning of his crucifixion so he is still lucid. The emphasis should not be on his physical pain, but on the pain of his soul.

“Ahhhh! (An elongated moan of agony. Followed by sobbing – more visual than aural) God! … Oh, God! … Please, God, forgive me. … I have sinned … I know I am a sinner. … All my life … I have done wrong. Oh, God! … I deserve this death. … I am a thief … a liar … I’ve cheated, I’ve lied, I’ve stolen, I’ve caused suffering … pain … sorrow. … Forgive me, Lord. … My parents are ashamed of me. … My brothers … and sisters … aren’t here. … I’m dying alone. … My sin has made me an outcast. … Why did I listen to you! (speaking to the other thief on another cross). Yeah, you! …
