Scene I -- Mary’s House

Mary, Joseph and their parents are having a celebration dinner. The dowry and the bride price have been paid and they are finishing dinner.

Heli -- A toast! To you, Jacob, for you have raised a fine young man! A man worthy of my daughter’s hand, And to you, Joseph, for having the wisdom and intelligence to choose Mary as your wife! May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make His face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift up His countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

All -- Amen!

Joseph -- Thank you.

Aldema -- That was wonderful, dear.

Cora -- Jacob!

Jacob -- What? Oh! A toast! To you, Heli for bringing up a, uh, beautiful daughter, a ah, worthy wife to my son. May she produce many fine boys to watch over you in your old age.

Cora -- Ahem (whispers)

Jacob -- And to you, Mary, for being willing to accept the offer of my son.

Cora -- Ahem.

Jacob -- Oh, and, uh, Honor and righteous are the inheritance of fathers; and a prudent wife is from the Lord.

Heli -- Ah!

Jacob -- Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not they mother when she is old.

Heli -- Ah!

Jacob -- It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

Cora -- Jacob, sit down!

Jacob -- Oh, uh, Amen!

All -- Amen.

Heli -- Well, thank you, Jacob … I, appreciate your advice.

Jacob -- Of course.

Joseph -- May I offer a toast?

Heli -- Certainly!

Joseph -- To my parents, who taught me to “hear instruction and to forsake not the law. For they shall be an ornament of grace upon thy head, and chains about thy neck.” To you, Heli, and Aldema, for creating a special blessing that the Lord had given me. And to you Mary, “Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee. Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck. How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! How much better is thy love than wine! And the smell of thine ointments than all spices!”

Aldema -- Oh, Joseph

Cora -- That was beautiful.

Heli -- Wonderful, wonderful.

Cora -- Let me help clean up, Aldema, so these men folk can talk.

Aldema -- Sit down, Cora, Mary and I can do this.

Cora -- Nonsense! I’d rather gossip with you than listen to their conversation.

Aldema -- All right. Mary, get some plates for your brothers, They’ll be chewing on mud if we don’t get them something soon.

Mary -- Yes, mother.

What went on in the minds of Mary and Joseph before the birth of the Christ child? What about their families? If Joseph had to go to Bethlehem to be counted, then his father must have had to, too. It is very likely that they had relatives still in the area. Why then were they alone? It is not the nature of those in the mid-east to ignore and reject family members. Why did Joseph not journey with his father for protection from marauding bands in nothing else?

These questions sparked the idea for this presentation. Mary and Joseph were two young people in love and they had all the dreams and hopes that all young people explore. The visitation of the Lord upon Mary changed their lives forever. No longer were they innocent children, but they were thrust into a world of doubt and shame – at least from the view of those around them.

Think of the fortitude, courage and character they must have possessed to pull them through this confusing time. Would we have the strength to stand for right with all the pressure that family and friends throw our way to block the right path?
